The Engineering Process of Youtube

Serving all of the video uploads, as well as handling all of the Internet traffic, keeping the site virus-free, takes a lot more than 3 men can handle, even with their resources from their families and whatnot. On October 9 (which happens to be my birthday), 2006 Google bought Youtube for 1.65 billion dollars, howeever, the people at Youtube still work independently.

Youtube was first registered on February 15, 2005. The very first video to be uploaded to the site was called “Me at the Zoo” which featured 19 seconds of Karim standing in front of some elephants. Nike finds marketing potential in the uploading of videos, and posts a soccer commersial on their site. While all this is happening, the amount of people who are using the social networking site, Myspace, is skyrocketing. It may seem that Myspace has nothing to do with the process of  Youtube, but it was actully a major part of it. people were uploading links to videos that were on Youtube on their Myspace pages. The number of Myspace users went from 4.9 million in November of 2004 to 26.7 million in November of 2005. Youtube officially debuted on December 15 of 2005, and two days later, Saturday Night Live aired “Lazy Sunday” which not only attracted more users to Youtube, but made Andy Sandberg famous.

They based some of their idea off of a website that was called HOTorNOT.com. It was a dating site, in which people could upload videos of themselves that would enable potential ‘partners’ to rate their videos on a 1-10 scale based on their ‘hotness’. What i find funny about this is the fact that they just happened to so readily know about this site… Another idea for the use of Youtube, was to aid people in conducting online auctions, because there was not really a video way of doing that yet either. Basically, they wanted the site to be as broad as possible, because the goal was to help people, therefore, it had to appeal to a very large market in order for it to be successful. nThey had been working on the site for several months, taking ideas from other websites such as Flickr and the previously mentioned HOTorNOT.

Taking on such an extremely large project as Youtube would require a lot of research. By now, they had the resources, they all worked in positions with considerable pay (Chad designed the logo that Paypal still uses today). Chad had also met his future wife, who happened to be part of a billionaire family that was very well entrenched in the workings of Silicon Valley.

The idea was instilled into both the minds of Chad and Steve after a dinner party, which was in Steve’s apartment at the time. The two were having trouble finding an easy way to share videos of the party through the internet. As far as marketing research goes, there was nothing like what they were looking for around.

The process of creating Youtube had started before either of the co-founders even thought about the idea. The founders include Chad Hurley, Steve Chen, and Jawed Karim. Chad Hurley, one of these co-founders, was always interested in computers, switching his major in college from computer science to graphical design. The knowledge was already there, before Youtube really took off.

I plan to explore the art of composing music, through the Apple program GarageBand. I plan to collaborate with two other people in producing a song. To learn more about the program, i will be using information from several website tutorials.

These will include:

  • http://homerecording.about.com/od/garagebandtutorials/ss/getting_started.htm
  • http://en.wikibooks.org/wiki/Garageband_Quick_Tutorial
  • http://www.macjams.com/article.php?story=20040329063101758

Through these, we will be able to master the program, and hopefully produce an awesome song!
